RIVER VALLEY PROJECTS AND PROPOSALS

(aka death by a thousand cuts)

  • Climbing gym in Whitemud Nature Preserve approved and built (2016)

  • New Walterdale Bridge completed, greatly impacting “pinch point” area (2017)

  • Funicular built (2017) Ongoing issues with bird strikes on glass, light pollution and heavy operational costs.

  • Alldritt Tower (80 storeys) approved (2017) Rezoned land out of the river valley.

  • EPCOR solar power plant, involving the rezoning of 99 acres of river valley parkland, approved (2020)

  • EPCOR Gold Bar expanded parking lot proposed. In abeyance. Trunk line still an issue to be resolved.

  • Easements to allow Mill Creek house approved

  • Rossdale “River Crossing” and “Touch the Water” development planned. Over development of the floodplain.

  • River Valley Road promenade proposed. Too much cement infrastructure in the flood plain. One positive element noted and that is partial “daylighting” or LID of groat ravine.

  • New LRT bridge alongside High Level proposed.

  • Gondola across the river proposed and defeated. But the developers are trying to re-propose.

  • Dawson Park expanded parking lot and Kinnaird Ravine suspension bridge proposed as well as much additional “furniture”. Issue again is capital project expansion without proper and transparent needs assessment. Inadequate consideration of ongoing operational costs.

  • Selling of peatland in NW edmonton. Land identified as priority for acquistion by the Geowest reports.
